Yesterday, OpenAI made ChatGPT Ads easier to measure.

This is where it stops feeling purely experimental.

OpenAI announced a beta self-serve Ads Manager for US advertisers, CPC bidding alongside CPM, and conversion measurement through pixel and Conversions API.

Ads are matched to conversational context, not exact-match keywords.

They can appear to Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu remain ad-free.

Advertisers get aggregated reporting, not individual chats, memories, or personal data.

OpenAI also says ads run separately from the model and do not influence ChatGPT's answers.

Without a way to tie spend to purchases, leads, sign-ups, or other outcomes, ChatGPT Ads are hard to justify as anything more than a test budget.

CPC + conversion measurement makes it look much closer to a real performance channel.

But it comes with a different risk than Google, Meta, or Amazon.

Paid placement does not control the organic answer.

If someone asks ChatGPT for the best product, tool, agency, or platform in your category, your ad may be sitting near an answer that recommends a competitor, misunderstands your positioning, or says something unfavorable.

That is where GEO and brand sentiment start to matter in a much more practical way.

Before spending heavily, I'd want to know how ChatGPT answers the buying questions my customers are already asking.

The other thing to watch is whether paid and organic stay fully separate over time.

OpenAI says ads do not influence organic ChatGPT answers.

But marketers should pay attention to indirect effects.

On Amazon, this is obvious: paid ads generate sales that drive organic rank.

The question is whether ChatGPT develops its own version of that loop, which opens up harder questions around trust and accuracy.

But... ChatGPT Ads aren't a black hole for ad dollars anymore.

I imagine over time additional performance insights will continue to be rolled out as OpenAI finds more ways to encourage ad spend through their platform.

But I wouldn't stop at 'did the ad convert?'

I'd want to know what ChatGPT said before the click happened.
